Building the Great Wall of China with brown bags is a great collaborative project. Today the class worked together to create a wall as long as they could. It required placing the bags side by side. The children had to make decisions about which directions the wall would travel.
The wall began in the classroom and quickly went into the hallway.
It then took a curve in the hallway and . . . .
. . .went up the stairs!
And around the corner. . .
. . . down the next hallway!!
There were challenges. The paper bags fell over very easily. Teams of children had to work together to repair places the wall tumbled. In the end – a running wall was built from within the classroom to the next level of the school. It was exciting and easy to remove!
This activity looks wonderful! I am in the process of planning the summer program for a Montessori school in Texas. Our theme for the summer is “World Explorers.” Each week, the children (ages 18 mos. through 5) will visit a couple of countries on a different continent. They will have “passports” as they travel around the world! China and visiting the GREAT WALL is one of the places I put on the calendar. I googled “building the great wall” & your site came up. Thank you!
