This is a super easy and fun project. It requires adult supervision.
What you will need:
- metal foil sheets (Dick Blick 12 aluminum sheets for $2.84)
- wooden styluses or pencils
- newspapers
- optional: cardboard frames (Dick Blick 12 white for $3.68)
Here are the aluminum 5″ x 5″ sheets
You want newspapers that are fairly thick.
Method One: Using a pencil or wood stylus press into the metal – drawing your design.
Here is a spider a student drew!
Method Two: Select leaves and sticks.
Make a pad out of paper towel. Press over the top of the aluminum sheet.
Method Three: Use a rubbing plate.
Put the rubbing plate under the aluminum sheet. Using a paper towel pad press.
Paint the white cardboard frame with watercolors.
Tape the metal art piece to the back of the frame.
Cut a piece of poster board to fit the back (to hide the ugly tape).
So much fun!
What a GREAT project! Thanks for the detailed tutorial, too. I’d love it if you’d share this (and other ideas of yours) at the After School Linky Party that’s up on my blog every Monday (at deceptivelyeducational.blogspot.com). Thanks!
Hi Sally! I am very excited to try this activity with my class. I checked Blick’s website and called them for the supplies. Unfortunately they didn’t sell 5″x5″ aluminium sheets for $2.84 but rectangular ones for $18.39. The pre-cut mats were also considerably more expensive and didn’t come in squares. That’s a bummer! Do you have any other suggestions to keep the costs down? Thanks!
