There are so many things you can do with Sight Word/Alphabet Jewels.  I wanted to share a bit of my process. . .

First, for emergent readers you MUST check LaDonna Wicklund's I Can Read Songs.  I highly recommend these materials.  She has a very engaging DVD with songs about sight words.

You will find on this site beginning readers with featured sight words.

I like to introduce the sight word and then have the child match the sight word jewel to the text.  Visual discrimination is important with the introduction of sight words.

literacy-gems-3

Not all children are ready for sight words.  I do not introduce sight words until all letters and letter sounds are mastered.

This student is working on letter sounds and fluency.

I have him reach in and pull out a letter, tell me its sound – then place it in proper order.

I keep all of those emergent readers in a handy basket and record the children's progress in my data book.

Have a wonderful week!
