Make Your Own Moon Sand

MOON SAND RECIPE
It is a basic 2 to 1 ratio (sand to cornstarch)
6 cups of play sand (I used Crayola Brand – Blue)
3 cups of cornstarch
1 1/2 cups of cold water

Begin by mixing the sand and cornstarch together.
Next, add the water and mix it with your hands.  You will have to work it through until you do not see any more cornstarch (white).

I store it in a plastic storage box and it doubles as the Moon Sand Sensory Center.

If it begins to dry out, just add a few tablespoons of water until it returns to the proper consistency.
FYI – for the batch I took photos of – I did not have enough cornstarch.   It did not matter!  It was still great moon sand.  It is not an exact science!
 Add cornstarch to colored sand.
Using your hands, mix the sand and cornstarch together.
 Add water.
 Mix water into sand mixture.
 Add space materials and play!

  1. We do something very similar, except we use baby oil instead of water. It prevents the mixture from drying out. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Wow! I have not heard of that! I will definitely try it! I just love the power of sharing on blogs! So cool!

Amazing! I will definitely remember 2 try tht!

  5. Tried this before and it didn’t work – I’m sure I had the proportions wrong. I’ll have to try it again using the 2 to 1 ratio you suggested. Love the baby oil idea too.

  6. Stephanie says:

Love the idea, but wonder how long it keeps

  7. Stephanie – I do not know the official answer to that BUT it does get old. I had moon sand mildew!

  8. T says:

If you use baby oil, is it still the same amount as you would use for water?

    • Anonymous says:

      Yes it is.

  9. Is the crayola sand finer than regular play sand?

  10. Hedwig Mockus says:

I live in the Florida Keys. We do not have any educational or craft type of stores.. Where do you buy the blue sand?

  11. Marion says:

This mixture went mildew-y astonishingly fast for us even though I only loosely covered it when not in use! If we were to try it again u would try replacing the water with baby oil as mentioned in the comments…

  12. Tia says:

I use the same ratio with baby oil as well. It has lasted quite a while. I only loosely cover it with a trash bag. It is kept in a small wading pool.

  13. Katy says:

Where do you find the Crayola play sand? Locally or through Amazon?

    • Sally says:

      I found it at Walmart!
